When approaching the work situation, think of it on a long-term basis, instead of just a short-term relationship. There are a lot of advantages to be gained by staying in touch with the supervisor. Perhaps a note, an email, a phone call once a year is all it will take. And this can lead to such things as great networking opportunities, where the supervisor may have heard about a good job that's coming up; and, as well, it will keep you in their radar and that might lead to a phone call coming from them, instead of you having to initiate it.
